Powell Farm

Welcome to Gemstone Farm, owned and operated by Hal and Linda Powell, and located in the foothills of upstate North Carolina, just 15 minutes from I-77. With six young alpacas back in 1998, we began as one of a handful of alpaca owners in the state, and we have enjoyed watching the growth of this new livestock industry. We had the first alpacas in our cattle-oriented county, and spent a lot of time answering questions from curious visitors, such as, "Are those emus?" As our herd has increased, so has our experience, knowledge and circle of friends who share our love for these beautiful, gentle animals.

Over 20 huacaya alpacas are at home here, with a variety of colors and ages and individual personalities. One goal has been to have as many of the 22 recognized colors as we can, and we're getting close! We keep alpaca products available to show how the luxurious fiber is used, and we offer yarn spun from our own herd. Our interest has continued to be caring for and being with our alpacas on a daily basis; this is our favorite thing! Having people come to the country and see our farm is another bonus, and we truly enjoy introducing our critters to interested visitors.
